For many of us that grew up along the coast, the lowcountry of South Carolina is synonymous with sun, sand, rivers and the marshes. The miles of beaches and scenic tidal tributaries all promote a feeling of comfort and serenity.  The weather, which is nice 80% of the year, makes you want to spend your time outdoors and the number of activities made possible by the close proximity to the ocean are seemingly endless. Surfing, sailing, kiteboarding, fishing, swimming, dock-jumping, water skiing, kayaking and paddleboarding are just a few of the water-related activities found in the coastal lowcountry.

I grew up on Hilton Head Island and the dazzling beauty of the coast grabbed me and never let go. I could not possibly take it for granted. Growing up in this area provided the opportunity to explore some of the small towns that line this part of the coastal South Carolina lowcountry including Beaufort, Bluffton, Ridgeland and Savannah. After moving to Charleston to attend college I appreciate the walk-everywhere lifestyle that comes with living downtown in the heart of this diverse, interesting city.  The food scene is dynamic, and the access to parks, minor league sports and concerts means there is always something to do.  Sure, I hear the pizza and bagels are good in the north but I certainly love the soul food and barbecue offered around here.  Charleston has that perfect balance of commerce, industry, events, shopping and dining, but still offers up a water-centric sea island lifestyle that is a necessity when you’re raised in the lowcountry.

I truly believe the ocean, the great weather and the flavors of southern cuisine have instilled a permanent sense of happiness and belonging in my soul. It’s true, growing up in rich landscape of the lowcountry and living full-time in Charleston does give you a certain appreciation for the smell of pluff mud, for always having a tidal chart handy, and for the way that Spanish moss catches the light in the early morning. It has been proven more than once that exposure to the sun plays a big role in a person’s happiness. That certainly might be a factor as to why Charleston is often voted one of the “friendliest cities ” by popular tourist publications.  Don’t get me wrong, plenty of people love living in Alaska and enjoy that environment as well; however, this is my environment and I would not trade it for the world.
