Charleston SC makes the top of a lot of lists, but it really should be included in anyone’s list of “pet friendly cities! ” As the proud mother of 8 “fur children ” I am thrilled to report that this charming community supports animal rights and rescues in many ways. Everyday via social media, I view multiple posts on Facebook about rescues needing homes, social activities designed around fundraisers and oftentimes, shared photos of lost animals looking for their owners.
We are home to two very large “no kill ” shelters. To brag a bit on one of our local shelters, the Charleston Animal Society just hit 200,000 Facebook fans and, in an adopt-a-thon this past weekend, they adopted out over 100 pets to their new forever homes. It left the shelter virtually empty which is quite an accomplishment. In addition to Charleston Animal Society there is a very special organization called Pet Helpers. There are also numerous smaller help organizations that exist purely for the benefit of rescued or unwanted animals.
I recently adopted a beautiful 1-year-old orange tabby who had been fostered by the Feline Animal Coalition and was housed at Pet Smart for adoption. Kevin is a truly delightful pet and a happy addition to our home.
If you visit Charleston there are numerous dog parks around the city (see www.bringfido.com and www.lowcountrydog.com). Because our weather can be so mild much of the year, many of our local restaurants allows pets in their outside dining areas. Always check web sites or call ahead to inquire, or have a look at our list of dog friendly restaurants around Charleston SC. There’s even the newest craze around Charleston – the Pounce Cat Cafe on Meeting Street where you can play with kittens or cats for an hour while sipping meowmosas!
Dogs are welcome on our local beaches as well, but please be aware there are leash laws and limited times of day that dogs may be allowed. The rules vary from beach to beach so please do your research before heading out with your four-legged companion.
Should you decide to move to Charleston there are many ways to get involved with pet adoption in Charleston SC! Animal advocate groups always need volunteers and it is a great way to meet new friends.
