If you grew up in Mount Pleasant SC you might have memories of a time when it was a sleepy, rural small town of tidal creeks, farmland, and tight-knit communities that shared in the legacy and art of weaving sweetgrass into baskets. These were the years when Johnnie Dodds was the Mayor of Mount Pleasant and Snee Farm was considered “way out ” in the country. Highway 41 wasn’t anything more than a rural country highway, dotted with modest concrete block ranch homes and a brick bungalow … or two. This 2-lane highway traveled over the Wando River across the old “swing bridge ” snaking through the Francis Marion National Forest across Cainhoy, connecting to Huger and on to Andrews beyond, and through rural central South Carolina.
This scenic corridor serves up tidal creek views of Horlbeck Creek and lush marsh dotted with tidal tributaries that snake off from the Wando River. From the minute you turn off of Hwy 17 onto Hwy 41 it becomes a more laid back, rural natural area that has disappeared in many parts of Mt Pleasant. Along portions of the roadway you will see all kinds of old, well-established flora & fauna including Crepe Myrtles, Azaleas, Hydrangeas, lilies and jasmine, growing wild at times, but still flourishing nonetheless. In the area known as the Phillips Community there’s a small church that is still attended and roads named for various people who served important roles in the community.
Today Highway 41 – from the Hwy 17 N. interchange at legendary Seel’s Outboard to the new Dollar General on Clements Ferry Road – has become a hub of retail and restaurants and the main route to some of Mount Pleasant’s most exclusive and desirable neighborhoods, including Park West, Dunes West and Rivertowne. These upscale communities offer access to the one thing that makes living in this part of Mount Pleasant one of the most sought after areas – waterfront living along the Wando River. Both Dunes West and Rivertowne on the Wando feature waterfront homes that include private deep-water docks which means you can step out your door and be on your boat in no time! A water lover’s lifestyle is undoubtedly the draw to these breathtaking Mt. Pleasant neighborhoods.
This area has grown rapidly over the past 15 years as these popular family neighborhoods have increased in size and added both shopping and dining destinations. This area includes some of Charleston County’s best elementary schools along with Wando High School – a top performing academic high school in the state and a sports powerhouse. Rivertowne is home to its own Harris Teeter grocery store which residents can walk, bike or ride their golf carts to. Nearby, the Park West community is anchored by a Publix and a retail plaza that offers lots of neighborhood dining options. And, along Hwy 41, you’ll find popular eateries like On Forty-One, Pier 41 and the Wando River Grille.
NOTE: Discover a life on the water that awaits in Mount Pleasant.
